What exactly is this? Found in a house built in the 1930’s. What was it used for, sending messages?

Yes Fortune, that's exactly what its for. It is a telegraph key (on the RH side with the big round button) that would be used to send outgoing Morse Code messages somewhere else for something, and the 'transponder' (probably not the exactly correct term there) which would be used to receive/translate incoming messages.

Neat item, and welcome to CW! :-) :-) :-)
