Vinaigrette ring? small containers used for holding various aromatic substances, usually dissolved in vinegar. A tiny piece of sponge, soaked in the liquid.
It was used to mask body odor. Their were times that bathing was not quite as often as it should have been.
vinigriattes usually have holes perforating the top so that it can be smelled more easily.
