This vase was presented to my father while he served with the US Army in Korea in 1951. It had a 2 page, hand-written letter inside from a Korean man he had hired to work as a cook. I have been told the vase itself is Chinese but the wrapping and inlaid mother-of-pearl was done after it was taken back to Korea from China. I would like to know if anyone has ever seen such a vase or if anyone is familiar with the inlaid mother-of-pearl design. Thanks.

It's a ceramic vase with some type of wrapping on it. The wrapping looks like leather but I was told it might actually be lacquer. Some other things people have told me: that it's called a "jarlet"; its shape is Chinese, however they didn't lacquer vases in China but they did in Korea; the inlaid mother-of-pearl design is indicative of royalty. I was told it was likely made in China and covered (lacquered?) and inlaid after it got back to Korea. Just what I've been told but no confirmation. Thanks.
