Garnet or Ruby?

Purchased at pawn shop in Joplin, MO after big tornado. I've often wondered if someone loved this ring and lost it in the storm.

Is a 10 K yellow gold ring with a beautiful red stone. When put to light it shows a red and blue rainbow. But looking with a 10 x loop appears to have some scratches on stone.

It is probably a garnet due to scratches. You can't see them with naked eye. It has become one of my favorite pieces.

The unusual cut had me hoping it was perhaps a ruby.
