i'm fairly confident in referring to this as a post-mortem, as the lax facial tone and sunken, partially open eyes are rather telling for me. often post-mortems are identified mistakenly, but this one seems hard to ignore.
it's nowhere near a perfect photo condition-wise, but i got quite a good deal on ebay and couldn't pass up adding one of these loving mementos to my CDV collection.

I would agree that this is a PM photo. Aside from the eyes, the position of the hands appear to be PM as well.
It's a shame that families often had only a photo of a family member after they died.
Thanks for the love, everyone and for the comment efesgirl! It seems unfortunate in modern day, doesn't it? I can't imagine infant mortality rates being so regularly high, but post-mortem photography was one way of the victorians dealing with that I suppose,especially with photography still being a novel sort of thing.

Oh my gosh! When I'm not on mobile I'll most definitely add the photo, which easily could have been the only one taken of her.
Oh it would definitely be the only one, I would think. There are still many Eisele's in Buffalo & Rochester. There are books written about the German immigrants to Buffalo!
well, upon creating an account and going to upload a photo, it specifically stated no post-mortems, so i guess i'm out. it is a bit disappointing since this was likely the only image ever of her, but maybe i'll just leave a note instead.
Oh that would be nice, and include a link to the photo here. Her family probably doesn't even know she existed at this point. I had no idea they didn't allow post mortems. Especially from over 100 years ago!
exactly! i doubt the family knows about the little girl that existed for only a year, so it was disappointing that i couldn't post the only image of her. i did end up leaving a note, so they're free to contact me if anyone ever finds her.
