      Need help with this item. As per my description it has been left to my mum and uncle.

      Well, normal houses run 120 volts now days except in appliance outlets, for which they have 250 volts. Either at the time this was made, it was meant to be an appliance, or it was made back before we went to standard 120 volts.
      If it has any patent dates, look them up in Google Patents and see when Granted. That can give you a 'no older than' date, but not a specific date.
