Question about the time period of these buttons and material used to make them

I recently found these buttons in my mother's collection. I would like to know more about the time period and the material they are made from. Unfortunately one does have a chip. They appear to be hand carved as each is slightly different from the others. Definitely beautiful to look at. Any comment would be appreciated. Thanks for looking.
